Being told that you have breast cancer is something that no one wants to hear. About one in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime, and if you are that “one” who is diagnosed, it can be incredibly helpful to seek support from other women who have been through it.
The Pink Life believes that women in northwest DFW who have been diagnosed with breast cancer deserve local support, regardless of where they are in their journey. Our goal is to create a community for women impacted by breast cancer, and to empower and encourage each other, with a private support group on Facebook, monthly support meetups and one day, weekend retreats.
Following my own breast cancer diagnosis at 36 years old, I struggled to find a local community of other women who have been there and understand all that comes with a breast cancer diagnosis. The groups that existed were either too far away or didn’t meet regularly. And while support from friends and family is important, it’s different and somehow more empowering to be around women who understand your story before you even tell it.
In October 2019, I posted in a local community group on Facebook to see if there were other breast cancer survivors nearby that would be interested in meeting up. It was surprising how many women expressed interest, so I began planning for our first meetup. After a few phone calls, a local hair salon called The Beauty Hive agreed to let us use their shop, which is beautifully decorated in gold and pink tones that was the perfect backdrop for a breast cancer meeting. Additionally, I was able to secure other local support, like a generous donation of appetizers and desserts from HG Sply Co in Trophy Club, coffee from Starbucks in Roanoke, and the Roanoke Dollar Store provided paper products. Eight survivors attended the first meetup for The Pink Life, where we shared stories and got to know each other. We have since grown to almost 60 members in our online group and average 15-20 survivors at our monthly support group events.
The Pink Life is very grassroots, so our members learn about it from other survivors and other cancer support groups. All of our meetups are a direct result of local businesses who generously agree to host us or provide other support.
Since October 2019, we have hosted various social meetups, like Painting at Art Z Gallery in Trophy Club, Dinner & Crafts at Trufire and Athleta in Southlake, Guided Meditation with North Texas Center for Mindfulness, and our most cheeky event – decorating cakes shaped like “boobs” at Bakeology DFW in Keller. Most of our members are naturally positive ladies who look for the good in life, even when facing a serious health situation. Our events are light-hearted and the conversations organically end up with members sharing their own experiences with each other. It is a safe space to connect with other survivors and know that we’re not alone in the fight against breast cancer.
Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we have paused all in-person events, and have instead hosted themed Zoom calls for our members. We look forward to meeting in person again, as soon as it is safe to do so.
