Taking care of Texas

While food insecurity has always been an important aspect of focus for SOS International, the issue has become even more pertinent as the COVID-19 pandemic has left families more vulnerable to instability in the home than we’ve seen in recent years. According to a study done by Feeding America, the food insecurity rate in Texas is projected to rise to over 20% of the population, and here in DFW is no exception.

SOS International partners with 72 different organizations and schools in the DFW Metroplex, as well as businesses like Frito Lay, Pepsi, 7/11 and Sysco, to provide families in need with aid. According to Dwayne Weehunt, Founder and President of SOS International, the organization has recently fed its 5,000,000 meal to DFW families affected by the economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic this year

A unique aspect of SOS International is their grassroots approach to bringing services to local county’s. By collaborating with churches and institutions that regularly work within their own communities, they can assist in expanding feeding programs, provide necessary resources and manpower, while also making sure that the families who need access to food, have it.

“They know what's going on, because it's their neighborhood,” said Christie Anthony, Director of Operations for SOS.

Your donations go much further than most people realize. Because of SOS International’s partnerships, they are able to get food and medications, at a drastically decreased price. For example, they are able to purchase $900,000 worth of over-the-counter children’s medications for $7,500. Dwayne shares

“When a business gives $10,000 it has a $110,000 effect right here around us, because we are combining it with gift-and-kind from working with these other companies. There is power in us all coming together and doing something together.”

Despite the uncertain times, it is still possible for you to make a local impact on those in your community who might need a helping hand, while still being able to keep yourself and your family safe. If you want to get involved in feeding or donating food during the holidays, they are looking for volunteers! Businesses that want to get involved, they have service opportunities for companies at their warehouse.
