Attention Parents: The Latest Craze Your Kids May Be Doing, But Shouldn't Be

December 14, 2018

Check out the picture. At a quick glance, can you tell what these are? Chances are, your kids do. But before you read any further, look at the photo closely and take a shot at what you think these could be.

Now that you've given it your best guess, it's time for the big reveal. These small devices are called JUULs and they're extremely popular among school-age kids.

A JUUL is a small device that looks much like a flash drive, but it's not. It's a version of an e-cigarette that contains nicotine. In fact, the amount of nicotine in one JUUL cartridge is roughly equal to the amount of nicotine in a pack of cigarettes, or about 200 puffs.

A JUUL can be easily concealed and doesn't produce a strong odor making it easy for kids to hide from their parents and teachers. According to a recent study, almost one-fifth of middle and high school students have seen JUUL used in school. JUUL comes in a variety of flavors, such as fruit medley, mango, cool cucumber, and creme brulee.  Flavored e-cigarettes are especially dangerous, not only because they attract youth, but because their young users are likely to be misinformed about the harmfulness of the products.

Despite having to be 18 years old to buy them, many teens say it's extremely easy to purchase one from a local store, online, or simply getting them from a friend.

If you'd like to see just how popular these devices are, check out this report featuring a student who shot a documentary about his young classmates' addiction to JUULING. If you have any questions or would like additional resources about JUULS, click on this link.
